Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum)

  • Origin: North America
  • Foliage: Simple leaves – alternating
  • Pruning Requirement: Needs a little pruning to grow with a strong structure
  • Flower: Brown and flowers in Spring
  • Fruit: Green or brown oval-shaped fruit that attracts birds, squirrels and other mammals
  • Pests: Bagworms and mites defoliate, especially in dry summers with little rain
  • Diseases: Twig blight can kills branches! Remove/Prune all diseased parts.

Chinese Pistache  (Pistacia chinensis)

  • Origin: Central and Western China
  • Foliage: Even pinnately compound – alternating
  • Pruning Requirement: Needs to be pruned to have a strong structure
  • Flower: Red showy flowers in Spring
  • Fruit: Fleshy oval fruit in blue, green or red that doesn’t attract wildlife
  • Pests: No pests are a major concern
  • Diseases: Verticillium wilt and oak root fungus are troublesome at times

Eastern Redbud (Cercis Canadensis)

  • Origin: North America
  • Foliage: Green simple leaves – alternating
  • Pruning Requirement: Needs pruning to have a strong structure
  • Flower: Lavender, pink or purple
  • Fruit: Brown and pod-shaped fruit that doesn’t attract wildlife
  • Pests: Borers, scaled insects and webworm can cause trunk problems and defoliation
  • Diseases: Canker, leaf spots in wet weather and verticillium wilt

Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus)

  • Origin: North America
  • Foliage: Bipinnately compound; odd pinnately compound – alternating
  • Pruning Requirement: Doesn’t need a lot of pruning to have a sturdy structure
  • Flower: White with a pleasant smell
  • Fruit: Brown or green and pod-shaped
  • Pests: No pests are major concerns
  • Diseases: No diseases are major concerns
